The Relationship between malnutrition, depressive symptoms, and cognitive impairment in geriatric patients

Aim: Malnutrition is an important health problem that frequently seen in elderly individuals and has cognitive psychological effects. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the frequencies of malnutrition, impairment depression population relationship between these three variables.Material Methods: retrospective data 433 patients aged 65 over who applied a university hospital geriatrics outpatient clinic Turkey were included. Nutritional status evaluated with Mini Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF), depressive symptoms Geriatric Depression Scale-Short (GDS-15) functions Mental State Examination results (MMSE).Results: According MNA-SF results, 13.6% malnourished, 30% at risk malnutrition. Of all patients, 45.0% had GDS-15 score ≥5, 12.5% severe dementia, 24.7% mild dementia.
